EXCLUSIVE - Troy Williamson interview

We are very excited about the noises being made in the north east recently. We have also made no secret of how much we enjoy the MGM shows in various regions. So what better way to combine the two than to speak to one of the team’s newest recruits; Darlington’s middleweight Troy Williamson. Following on from our ‘North East Predicts’ pieces, we spoke exclusively to the talented prospect. Williamson was a highly decorated amateur, representing Team GB and has now made the decision to join the professional ranks after 8 years as an amateur. It was really refreshing to speak to him and get his thoughts on his future, as well as the sport in general. MGM are undoubtedly on the up, so it's easy to see why they'd be an attractive option for any new professional boxer.

“I had a few offers from trainers and management teams but I’ll be staying with Andy [Marksby]. MGM have some good fighters like Billy Joe Saunders and David Price has just joined them. They’re taking over!”

Despite the many factions under the MGM banner, there is yet to be a north east version so it’s interesting for us that they would stretch this far but they obviously see some talent worth pursuing. Williamson himself said he is used to travelling from his amateur days, so boxing all over the country won’t phase him in the slightest.

“I don’t mind travelling all over. More people will know my name. If I get big title fights there is the Metro Radio Arena [in Newcastle]. I’ve got a few going so will just get as many as possible. “

“It’s up and coming in the north east at the moment” and he definitely seems keen to be a part of it.

Williamson is only 25 so has a good blend of amateur experience and time on his side. He confidently states that the long term goal is to get into the mix for world titles. It’s easy for us to say but Troy came across really well and spoke very openly and honestly about his plans for the future.

We also spoke at great length about Kell Brook and Gennady Golovkin (prior to Saturday’s bout) and I could easily have spent a few hours discussing the sport. Boxing obviously plays a big part in his life and that passion for the sport will no doubt hold him in good stead moving forward.
