Brook - Golovkin reaction

Like many others, we were initially sceptical when it was announced that Gennady Golovkin was travelling to these shores to defend his middleweight titles. And that was when his opponent was meant to be an actual middleweight. As Chris Eubank Jr supposedly 'lost his pen', not many in or out of the business would've been able to predict what came next. Undefeated IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook stepped up in more ways than one. In one fell swoop, he silenced those who believed he is avoiding tough competition and made the leap of 2 weight classes to face the man at the official weight limit. While I believe Brook needs to, and is looking to, make his own career path. Yet, it would be remiss not to draw the obvious similarities between this matchup and Canelo-Khan. Both Brits are up against it and have made the admirable ascent through the weight classes. Khan got a lot of credit (and some criticism) for willingly being the underdog. The main criticisms he faced were that he was avoiding challenges at welter, a criticism that has plagued the Special One for most of his career. The rivals both stand to make a huge purse while leaving their 147 credibility unscathed. Brook, like Khan was, is in a win win situation here as even if he gets blasted out within a round against GGG, he can still blame the weight and drop back down to defend his IBF strap. That is assuming he will still be able to make the 147 limit. Promoter Eddie Hearn has long hinted that Brook's body is more suited to Super Welterweight so it wouldn't be a massive surprise if we've already witnessed his last welterweight match. If that is the case then his world title reign can only be classed as a major disappointment. Especially when you consider the talent pool that has been available since he defeated Shawn Porter almost 2 years ago. Do those missed opportunities become irrelevant if he beats Golovkin? Quite possibly. With an unlikely victory, Brook would become the hottest commodity in world boxing. He could demand, and likely get, any fight he wanted from welter to middleweight (although I can't see him hanging around 160 for long). As massive Kell Brook fans we have defended him staunchly (and expressed significant frustration) so we are immensely excited that he now has an opportunity that we believe his talent warrants. We will give our thoughts on how the fight will pan out nearer the event itself.
