It's fair to say at our first MGM Scotland show last December we were mightily impressed. And not just getting to meet Amir Khan! Undefeated Super-Lightweight prospect Lewis "Kid Caramel" Benson scored a sensational stoppage victory as he continues his rise through the professional ranks. Ahead of his next outing this coming Thursday, we caught up with the Edinburgh boxer.
British Boxing Blog - Tell us about your amateur career and your boxing background?
Lewis Benson - Hi. I started boxing when I was 13 and had my first fight when I was 14. Boxed all over the world for Scotland. In 2010 I moved to Lochend boxing club, where I won 4 Scottish titles in a row a British title as well as boxing all over the world in some of the biggest competitions. I had 101 amateur fights winning 70.
BBB - Who are your all time boxing idols?
LB - Tommy Hearns and Floyd Mayweather.
BBB - You made your debut in 2015 and are now 4-0 as a pro. How do you assess your pro career so far?
LB - I feel I've adapted well to the pros everyone but my team thought I wouldn't be a good pro because of my style but I know I will prove them wrong because I can adapt to anything all it takes is hard work and dedication and a good team behind you.
BBB - We have been present at your last two fights at Meadowbank. Your stunning stoppage against the usually durable Matt Seawright really caught the eye. What were your thoughts after that one? A good nights work surely?
LB - I knew it was only a matter of time before I started getting people out there. My first 2 fights I just lacked the killer instinct because I hurt them both just couldn't finish them. So it was good to finally get someone out there especially when I wasn't out of 2nd gear.
BBB - Last time out, i mentioned in our review after the fight that you looked a frustrated figure at the end of the bout, as your opponent (Radoslav Mitev) didn't get off his stool at the end of the first round. What are your thoughts on that one now? Frustration but pleased to get the win?
LB - It was good to get another stoppage I just didn't like how it happened because I was starting to get to him and before the bell went I was just getting into my rhythm. Then he knew that and wouldn't come back out. It is a credit to me because he only gets stopped of good fighters and he does normally go the distance.
BBB - You mentioned after the fight that you are now on the look out for the big fights. What are your plans from this point forward? Is the Scottish Title on the horizon?
LB - I would beat the Scottish champion easily now I actually think I would stop him but his promoter told my promoter they won't take it. I want to get to about 9-0 by Christmas then look to challenge for something big at somepoint in 2017. If I got the call for a big fight I would jump at it if my team think it's a good move for me
BBB - As an Edinburgh boy, how much does it mean to you to be fighting in your home city?
LB - It's amazing to be fighting in Edinburgh as I'm a local lad and have a great following and they make it a great night for me and I always try my best to put on a good performance.
BBB - You're getting regular fights on the MGM Scotland shows. You must be really pleased about staying active, especially at the start of your pro career?
LB - Yes I've been kept very busy just how I wanted it which is what you need at the begging of your career. I am a full time boxer so I am always fit and ready to fight
BBB - Which other Scottish boxer should we keep an eye on in 2016?
LB - It's got to be the Scotland commonwealth games team, had some great talent that have all turned Joe ham, Charlie Flynn, Kieran smith, josh Taylor, Ross Henderson and All unbeaten and looking good in there fights. Some of my best memories in boxing is traveling the world with them and the rest of the squad.
BBB - And finally, what are the aims for Kid Caramel in 2016? Where would you like to be in 12 months time in terms of your career?
LB - I want to keep winning and hopefully start knocking on the door for big title fights next year but as I said earlier I'm ready to fight for the Scottish championship now but I will leave that to my management to get me the fights which are good for my career
