Saltire Boxing Promotions presented an excellent evening of boxing from the Paisley Lagoon Centre which featured Dundee's Mike Towell taking on Gateshead native Robert Dixon over 10 rounds in an eliminator for the British Welterweight title. The nights action began with Barrhead Super Lightweight Steven Rae (2-0) taking on the tried and tested Matt Seawright (5-130-5) over six rounds.
Seawright was illusive early as Rae looked to establish jab and control the centre of ring. Rae worked well on the inside in the opening stages.
The pace upped from the second onwards as Rae displayed a good variety of punches which led to the Barrhead man flooring Seawright with a perfect one two towards the end of round two. The mid rounds of the contest was more of the same. Rae landed good right hands which visibly caused Seawright problems however the Tanworth man did his best remain illusive throughout. Rae's right hand continued to cause Seawright problems in the latter stages as Seawright was put into survival mode after countless calculated onslaughts from the impressive Scot. Rae showcased some switch hitting and continued to attempt to deliver powerful right hands in the final proceedings in what as a controlled performance throughout.
The referee in charge Kenny Pringle scored the contest 60-53 in favour of Steven Rae. Edinburgh's John McCallum (8-1) returned to the ring for the first time since October last year where he was stopped by former Premier League footballer Leon McKenzie. He faced the tough Mitch Mitchell (6-45-2, 2KOs) over four rounds.
The pair exchanged meaningful jabs and left hooks early with both fighters looked to gain control of the ring. McCallum looking to get Mitchell's respect early loading up with big shots which saw the Edinburgh man land a good body shot end of round one seemed to stop Mitchell in his tracks. The fight progressed with more pressure coming from McCallum in round two which stopped any advances from Mitchell. McCallum's body shots seem to hurt Mitchell as the Edinburgh man looked for the left hook to the body on the inside. The Scottish Super Middleweight looked powerful throughout putting Mitchell on to the back foot throughout the fight as he put together good combinations throughout the rounds.
Pressure came from McCallum at the end of round four which put Mitchell into survival mode. Mitchell was deducted one point for use of the head at the end of round four which led to a war breaking out in the final minutes of the contest. The referee in charge Darren Maxwell scored the contest 40-35 in favour of Edinburgh's John McCallum. 2014 Team Scotland Commonwealth Games representative Kieran Smith (3-0, 2KOs) took on Plymouth's Christian Hoskin-Gomez (4-9-2, 1KO) at Middleweight.

Hoskin-Gomez came back with some effective shots of his own however it was Smith who was showing a great variety of shots, boxing on both the front and back foot. Smith's hand speed and shot variety was perfect, a joy to watch.
The mid rounds saw continued constructive pressure from Smith, utilising sophisticated pressure on both the front and back foot as he continued to display an excellent variety in shots.
The latter rounds saw a continued display of calculated pressure from Chopper Smith. The talented Light Middleweight controlled the range perfectly throughout. The referee in charge scored the contest 40-36 in favour of Kieran Smith who will look to push on quickly as he will undoubtedly be a star in Scottish boxing for many years to come.
Greenock born Louisiana based Super Middleweight Zane 'The Train' Marks (20-7, 12KOs) made his Scottish debut against Lithuania's Egidijus Kakstys (5-27-2, 2KOs).
Marks who had once shared a ring with Former IBF World Champion Lucien Bute started at a fast pace as he looked to impress the local crowd at Paisley's Lagoon Centre. The New Orleans resident showed he had a good jab and showcased a slick southpaw style as he dominated the early proceedings.
Kakstys touched down in the second round from a right hook well timed Marks right hook. This theme continued as the Lithuanian hit the canvas once again from a straight left hand from Zane who's looked sharp and slick as he utilisied his southpaw stance and punching power effectively. The UBO North American Champion had a more aggressive start to round three as he loaded up with left hands and right hooks. The inevitable end came from a perfectly timed right hook to the body from Marks in round three as Kakstys was unable to meet referee's Victor Loughlin's ten count. The American raised Zane Marks is definitely a good addition to the Scottish and UK Super Middleweight scene and will likely look to face some of Scotland's own rising Super Middleweight's this year. The main event saw a British Welterweight title eliminator contested between Gateshead's Robert Dixon (13-2, 1KO) and Dundee's big punching Mike Towell (10-0-1, 7KOs).
Towell started at an electric pace but walked onto a perfectly timed right hand from Dixonin the first as he touched down. It was a fast exciting start from both fighters with both fighters loading up with big shots early and neither looked to take a backward step. Towell cut in the first round above the right eye from the right hand shot that put him down.
Dundee's Towell started just as quickly in the second round, as he looked to land big shots on his English opponent. Dixon looking more of the well schooled up right boxer, picked his shots better than his Dundee opponent however didn't display the same volume of punches as the big punching Towell. Towell's continued relentless tolled in the second round, which saw the Dundee man deliver a brutal knockout after delivering a vicious flurry of punches, landing big hooks and straights on Dixon's chin. No count was needed from referee Bob Williams as the brave Dixon's legs had gone and he was visibly unable to defend himself.

On the whole it was an enjoyable evening of boxing presented by Saltire Promotions, which displayed the skills of promising prospects as well as an action packed main event!
