Ahead of what is a mammoth month for North East boxing, we got the opportunity to speak to main eventer of Phil Jeffries latest showcase, Tommy Ward. The younger brother of former world title challenger Martin, gets the opportunity to take a step closer to securing the coveted Lonsdale belt against Welshman Robbie Turley. We get his thoughts on training so far, the influence of his brother and how he hopes to claim the British Super-Bantamweigh title.
British Boxing Blog - Please tell us about your boxing background. How did you get in to the sport?
Thomas Ward - I got into the sport when my mam took Martin to the boxing gym. I saw him do it, followed him to the gym and been in ever since.
BBB - Who are your all time boxing idols?
TW - I don't know really, there are so many great fighters to look up to. I’ll come back to that.
BBB - We are now less than 2 weeks from your fight on March 5th. How is your camp going so far? What will you be doing for the next 10 days leading up to your fight to make sure you are in the best shape possible?
TW - Camp has gone really well. I am in great shape and the next couple of days will just be to stay focused and keep in shape with my mind on the job.
BBB - You're fighting Robbie Turley on March 5th at Rainton Meadows arena in a British title eliminator. Are you expecting this to be the toughest fight of your career so far?
TW - On paper it is yes but we will see if it is on the 5th of March. He's a good fighter and I expect a good fight. I’m ready for whatever.
BBB - How confident are you that you can extend your unbeaten record and emerge victorious from this fight?
TW - I’m very confident. Everything has gone well, we are ready to fight and I can’t wait for it!
BBB - How much do you enjoy fighting at Rainton with the support of the local fans behind you?
TW - I really enjoy fighting in Rainton because it's my home and I get good support from all of my friends and family and supporters.
BBB - Does it give you extra motivation to win the British title knowing that your older brother Martin came so close last year? Do you believe the Ward family have unfinished business with this belt?
TW - Yes I am motivated to win the British title. Martin came very close to getting it. He was so unlucky, I feel like he should have got the British title so I really want to win it for everyone; all my friends, family and the North East. And I will do it.
BBB - How important has Martin's influence been on your career? Is he someone you have always looked up to in boxing?
TW - Martin’s been very important my whole life, especially in boxing. He's always been there for me to learn from and teach me He keeps me on the good path. I’ve got a very good family who’ve always been there and support me throughout my boxing. Martin was winning titles at a young age. I saw all that and I wanted to do it so yeah he's been a very big influence on me and still is.
BBB - Which other North East fighter, apart from yourself do you think we should be keeping an eye out for this year?
TW - The North East is getting better by the day. It would be hard to say just one of them. Keep your eye on all of the North East. It will be booming at the end of this year and boxing will be bigger than it has ever been here.
BBB - And finally, what are the aims for Tommy Ward in 2016? Where would you like to be with your career in 12 months time?
TW - My aim this year is to keep doing what I’m doing and listen to Nile, he's the one that's going to take me to the top. But I would like to win the British title this year, defend it and move on but will just see. I take one fight at a time and am looking forward to my next fight and will see where we go from there.
