This Saturday (7th Nov) sees Matchroom Boxing’s return to Liverpool for the ‘Who’s Fooling Who?’ show, headlined by arguably 2015’s domestic fight of the year as Liverpool’s two unbeaten Super Middleweight’s, Callum Smith and Rocky Fielding clash for the British title (see our article on the main event here).
A fight that we here at British Boxing Blog are looking forward to though, is the unbeaten Scotty Cardle’s (18-0) first defence of his British Lightweight title against local scouse favourite, Sean “Masher” Dodd (10-1). This matchup has really caught the imagination of UK Boxing fans and has now been moved to the chief support slot on the stacked card.
It has certainly been a long and frustrating wait for Cardle to defend his lightweight crown that he won in a thriller against Craig Evans on the Kell Brook v Frankie Gavin undercard in May. Since then he has battled against a quadriceps injury suffered in sparring, meaning his first scheduled defence against Gary Buckland was delayed.
Cardle’s pain however, was “Masher’s” gain, with the Scouse favourite stepping in at short notice for what served as a final eliminator for Cardle’s belt. Sean produced the fight of his life in front of a passionate Liverpool public and beat Buckland on points in an enthralling contest.
This Saturday’s contest is expected to be no less enthralling, and Cardle, who is a 1/5 favourite with some bookmakers, may well face a tough test of his credentials if Dodd, who will undoubtedly be roared on by his vociferous local support, reaches the heights of his last performance.
Cardle it has to be said however, is a very talented boxer who may well benefit from the increased time spent in Joe Gallagher’s high flying gym, having not fought since May. He will start as a deserved favourite for the fight and, if he boxes to the level we all know he can reach, should have too much for the game but not as technically proficient, Dodd.
“Masher” should also be wary of Cardle’s power, which can be somewhat overlooked with only 5 stoppages on his 18 fight record. However we here at BBB saw first hand just what power Cardle does possess when he destroyed our North East local favourite Kirk Goodings, who recently lost a close decision against Glenn Foot up at welterweight, with a blistering first round stoppage in an English Lightweight title back in September 2014.
This fight promises to be a more than worthy chief support to Smith v Fielding, and although it may be a fight Cardle should win, one thing that Dodd has shown many times in the past is you can never write him off!
